Braving fridged temperatures, 17 activists staged a candlelight vigil on the north steps of the Statehouse Thursday evening. Representatives such as Ken Morgan, dressed in Colonial attire, complete with post lantern as a town crier, from Indiana Voters League spoke of the immorality of a broken system that may have worked in Colonial times when the largest city was 18,000 people, but has become layered with grotesque applications that cry for repeal in today’s world.

David Bond of Stop Indiana ran and re-ran the numbers of Dr. Styring’s 2-2-2 solution for total elimination of property taxes and says the numbers are very workable.

Fearing property tax repeal will be given scant notice and lay dormant in the Senate Rules Committee under bill SJR0008, headed by David Long, Indiana Property Tax Repeal Alliance Activists joined with Hoosiers For Fair Taxation to bring awareness to this practice of tokenism and sought symbolically to shed light through candles and placards, some of which referred to the Senate ‘Fools Committee’, or “Caught Red-Handed”. Also mentioned is that over 70% of a recent statewide poll of Hoosiers favor the repeal.

Consensus of this broad Alliance is for the total repeal of this broken property tax system and include the desire for all legislators to have the opportunity to register their vote instead of this bill suffering a committee killing. The people are demanding a vote from their legislators in open daylight.
