Text of Kurt Feich's remarks and question presented to Governor Daniels at the Lafayette town hall meeting on Friday morning:
My name is Kurt Fiech, I have been a Republican candidate for Tippecanoe County Council and am currently a Tippecanoe County Republican Precinct Committeeman.
I have to say that it is disturbing to see fellow Republicans pushing to
centralize government power into fewer government entities either by
eliminating a form of government –townships - or by reducing the number of people holding power, or by taking the voters' accountability away from them with more appointed government positions.
The problem is NOT that there are too many different governments – like townships, counties, cities, etc, but that there are too many government functions in EACH of our governments - interfering in our daily lives.
Multi-FORMS of government are NOT layers of government, but DIFFERENT government entities that are needed to provide CHECKS & BALANCES so that no one form of government can oppress the people. It is NOT a solution to push the legitimate government functions farther away from the people they serve.
Governor, my question is WHY are Republicans, who understand that “government is the problem not the solution,” so eager to consolidate government power in the hands of fewer people?
The Governor answered by stating that people don't know their elected township officials.

Kurt Feich - You are 100% correct.
Thanks for posting this Melyssa. I've been saying the same thing for a long time.
